Veggie Supreme on Steel: Crispy, Cheesy & Oven-Baked to Perfection

Nothing beats the satisfaction of pulling a bubbly, crisp-based pizza out of your own oven - especially when it’s baked on Pizza Steel. The image above says it all: blistered crust, gooey cheese, and a medley of fresh veggies sitting proudly on a slab of steel designed for serious home cooks.

This pizza is a great reminder that you don’t need a wood-fired oven to make great pizza. With a bit of fresh dough, good ingredients, and a preheated baking steel, you're already on your way.

Why Use a Pizza Steel?

Steel conducts heat faster and stores more energy than a traditional pizza stone. That means when your fresh dough hits the steel, it starts cooking instantly giving you that crispy, airy, golden base in just a few minutes.

Veggie Supreme Pizza Recipe

This pizza is all about layers of colourful vegetables, melty cheese, and a base that’s crisp and golden thanks to the steel.

Ingredients (1 x 12-inch pizza):

Dough:

  • 240g of fresh pizza dough (homemade or store-bought)

Base:

  • 1/4 cup tomato passata or pizza sauce

  • 1/2 tsp dried oregano

  • 1 tsp olive oil

Toppings:

  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella (low-moisture recommended)

  • 1/4 red capsicum (sliced)

  • 1/4 green capsicum (sliced)

  • 2–3 mushrooms (sliced)

  • 1/4 cup chopped spring onion or leek

  • Salt & pepper to taste

Method

1. Preheat Your Oven and Steel

  • Place your Pizza Steel on the middle or top rack.

  • Preheat your oven at 240°C (464°F) for at least 45 minutes.

2. Stretch Your Dough

  • Lightly flour your bench.

  • Stretch or roll your dough into a 12-inch round.

  • Transfer to a semolina-dusted pizza peel or the back of a tray.

3. Add the Toppings

  • Spread sauce over the base, leaving a 1 cm edge.

  • Add cheese, then layer your vegetables evenly.

4. Bake

  • Slide the pizza onto the hot steel.

  • Bake for 6–7 minutes or until the crust is golden and bubbling.

  • For extra char, switch to broil/grill mode for the final 1–2 minutes.

5. Serve

  • Remove, slice, and enjoy while hot!

Caring for Your Pizza Steel

Taking care of your Pizza Steel ensures it lasts a lifetime.

After Each Use:

  • Let the steel cool completely in the oven before handling.

  • Wipe clean with a dry cloth or use a scraper to remove baked-on bits.

  • Avoid soap and water the steel is seasoned, and moisture can lead to rust.

Seasoning (Occasionally):

  • Rub a light layer of flaxseed or vegetable oil onto the surface.

  • Bake it in a hot oven (200°C or higher) for 30–45 minutes.

  • Let cool in the oven. This adds a protective layer and helps keep it non-stick.

Storage:

  • Store flat in your oven (it helps with heat consistency!)

  • Or hang it via the corner holes if your model includes them.

Final Slice

This Veggie Supreme is proof that your home oven, paired with an Pizza Steel, can turn out pizzas that rival your favourite pizzeria. With fresh ingredients, a good dough, and a blazing-hot steel plate, you're not just making dinner you're making a tradition.
